Wait
for the LORD
David had many enemies. They ranged
from lowly servants to the King of Israel. They were people inside and outside
of his associates. Some were even members of his own family. He addresses his
enemies in quite a few of His Psalms. I think that in reading and praying, the Psalms,
it is perfectly appropriate and fitting for us to personalize them with the perspective
that we too have enemies. Ours may be unseen, yet just as real, just as
menacing and just as dangerous. Our unseen enemies are subtle, crafty, deceitful
and deadly. So, when I read the 27th Psalm about evildoers who are
David’s adversaries and enemies, I equate them to my unseen enemies in the
spiritual realm. These enemies seek to steal, kill and destroy everything that
is precious to the LORD. Dear Father, in the secret place of Your tent, please
hide us. Lift our heads above the enemies around us. Hear us, O Lord, when we
cry. Be gracious to us and answer us. Your face, O Lord, we shall seek. Do not
hide Your face from us. Do not turn away in anger; You have been our help; do
not abandon us nor forsake us. O God of our salvation! Teach us Your way, O
Lord, and lead us in a level path because of our foes. Do not deliver us over
to the desire of our adversaries. We would have despaired unless we believed
that we would see your goodness. Help us to wait for You. Help us to be strong
and help our hearts to take courage. And may we dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of our lives, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in
His temple (from Psalm 27).
