Tazria – She Conceives
It seems extremely prudent to me (and necessary) that laws regarding quarantine were established to protect Israel while camping in the wilderness. Today’s reading describes the protection for a mother who just delivered a child; and the protection for the community against contagious skin diseases. Besides quarantine, we read of the law regarding circumcision on the eighth day for a baby boy, the mother’s offering to the priest when her days of purification are completed and the law requiring the person with a skin disease to present themselves to the priest for examination and pronouncement that they are clean.  I love seeing the continuity of Scripture as we read about the implementation of these laws in Luke’s gospel account. Both John the Baptist and Jesus were circumcised the eighth day (Luke 1:59, 2:21). Luke explains further in chapter 2 that when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord), and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons” (Luke 2:22-24). Also, in Luke, we read that Jesus healed ten men with leprosy and told them to “Go, show yourselves to the priests”. (Luke 17:11-19). Dear Father, thank You for laws of protection, and for the wonderful continuity of Scripture, from the days of ancient Israel in the desert through the gospel accounts, and even for us today (1 Timothy 3:16-17). How blessed we are that such amazing details have been preserved for us! How blessed we are to read the unfolding of Your plan of salvation for all Your children from Genesis to Revelation. Thank You for Your amazing faithfulness and unending love.
