Follow Me
The
last words of instruction from Jesus (recorded in the book of John) was to
Peter: “Follow Me” Jesus said. Peter understood that the call to follow Jesus
was not going to be easy. Earlier in the gospel accounts, Jesus taught him and
the other disciples that following Jesus meant to deny the self and to take up their
own cross (Mark 8:34). Peter would later write in His epistle to the brethren, “To
this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example,
that you should follow in His steps” (1 Peter 2:21). What were some of the
examples that Jesus set for us to follow? To list a few: Jesus said and did
only what the Father directed Him to (John 8:28); Jesus lived a life of service
(Mark 10:45); And Jesus loved with a sacrificial love, laying down His own life
for the life of others (John 15:13). Dear Father, may we take up our cross and
follow Jesus our Lord. May we deny the desires of the flesh and walk in His
Spirit of truth and light. May we hear and obey His voice. May we live a life
of service. And may we love others with sacrificial love. By these things, may we bring glory and honor to Your great name, because we follow
in the steps of Your Son.
