Zechariah 5-8

I Will Return to Zion

The town of Bethel sent men to Zechariah to seek the LORD’s favor. They asked if fasting in the fifth month (as was their custom) would grant them His favor. The LORD pointed out that their fasting did nothing but make themselves feel good. “Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.” This is what would grant the LORD’s favor – not their empty religious practices. The LORD said that He will be their God in truth and righteousness. “The fast of the fourth, the fast of the fifth, the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth months will become joy, gladness, and cheerful feasts for the house of Judah; so, love truth and peace.” Dear Father, may we dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion to our brothers and sisters. May we serve You by giving to those in need and may we love truth and peace. Help us to be a people who represent You well and bring honor and glory to Your name.
