Sh’mini

For some reason, Aaron’s two oldest sons were prompted to present an
offering of their own initiative, (a strange offering) one that had not been
commanded or sanctioned by the Lord. And they were consumed with fire that came
out from the presence of the Lord because in presenting a strange offering, they
had not treated the Lord as holy, and had dishonored Him before all the people.
This event set a precedence for the priesthood to walk carefully in the
commandments of the Lord and to worship in a way that honored Him. However, after
many years went by, we see increasing examples of the priesthood (as well as the
leaders of Israel) turning from the ways of the Lord and leading the people
astray, which eventually led to Israel’s demise. How blessed we are with the example
of our High Priest, Jesus, who always did what the Lord commanded and
sanctioned. Jesus said, “I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these
things as the Father taught Me. And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left
Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him” (John 8:28-29). Dear Father, thank You for Your Son – our High
Priest, Jesus the Messiah. Thank You for the example of His honor toward You. May
we also be dedicated to honoring You, by doing nothing on our own initiative (like
Nadab and Abihu did) but that which You have taught us in Your Word. And like
Your beloved Son, may we be children in whom You are well-pleased, bringing
honor to Your great name.
