But
Now My Eye Sees You
Finally, Job’s request to have an
audience with God was fulfilled. However, Job’s boldness to confront God seemed
to dissolve when God asked the first question, “Who is this that darkens
counsel by words without knowledge?” This question was applicable to Job and
his three friends because they reasoned from a faulty premise. They all
believed that God was afflicting Job, therefore they were asking the wrong
question: “Why was God afflicting Job?” The real question was the one asked by
Satan, “Does Job fear God for nothing?” (If the blessings and protection from
God were removed, would Job still fear God or would he curse God?) So, God
established the correct premise with a summation about His creative and
sustaining powers. And then Job realized how little he understood and how small
he was compared to God. Then God asked Job a second question, “Will you condemn
Me that you may be justified?” Did Job really think that he was qualified to
judge God? If Job wasn’t even a match for the Behemoth, what made him so
presumptuous to consider himself a match for God? God alone has the eminence,
dignity, honor and majesty to judge. He alone can humble the proud and crush
the wicked. He alone can subdue the most powerful of all God’s creation - the
Leviathan, king over all the sons of pride. Then Job finally saw God. And he
humbled himself. Job understood that God was to be feared because He was God,
not because of what He could do for Job. Dear Father, do I fear You for
nothing? Is my love and praise for you conditional – based on my circumstances?
Teach me to love You with all my heart and soul and might. May I always praise Your
name. From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be
praised. The LORD is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens. Who
is like the Lord our God? (Psalm 113).
