He Does Not Regard Any Who are Wise of Heart
Elihu said that though we cannot see the light, it is still shining bright in the sky. When the wind blows, it clears the clouds away. And out of the north comes a golden glow, fearsome majesty surrounding the all-powerful and righteous God (Job 37:21-23). Sometimes, when darkness surrounds us, we think that God has left. But he has not. God is still there. And He is doing a work in us. He is transforming us from self-centered beings who are prone to pride and evil, to selfless and loving children of God. Sometimes…perhaps most often… transformation is a painful process. Job hadn’t understood this. He just wanted out. He longed for death so that he could escape the suffering. But death is not the answer. Nor is escape. Trusting in God to bring us through the storm is. We have to trust God. We have to trust in His love. And we have to expect God to fulfill the promise that the work He began in us will be gloriously completed! Dear Father, help us when we are overtaken by darkness to trust that the light is just behind the clouds. Help us to know that You haven’t left us. Help us to sense Your hand holding ours as You guide us through the storm. Help us not to lose heart, but trust that whatever our affliction, it is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison (2 Corinthians 16-17).
