Seek
Good and Not Evil, That You May Live
“Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”
Amos told the people. He warned those at ease in Zion, who were sprawled on
their couches and who grew fat from self-indulgence, to seek the LORD and live.
Otherwise, the day of the LORD will come to them as a day of darkness – void of
all light. The people of Israel were a religious people, yet they held in
contempt the ways of God. They wrote songs, played instruments and sang praises
to God, yet they oppressed the poor and crushed the needy. They made a show of
worship, yet they resisted the righteousness of God. Why did His people always
resist walking in the ways of righteousness? Because, without the Spirit of
God, they could not subject themselves to the law of God. Without the Spirit of
God our minds are on things of the flesh. And the mind set on the flesh is
death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace (Romans 8:6). Dear
Father, thank you for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. May the indwelling of Your
Spirit transform us and make us Your children. May Your Spirit put to death the
deeds of our flesh. May Your Spirit lead us on the path of righteousness for
Your name’s sake and may we look forward with joyful anticipation to meet our
God!
