A
Humble Spirit Will Obtain Honor
An
unjust man is abominable to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is
abominable to the wicked (verse 27). Scripture warns that the children of God will receive
persecution from the wicked for righteousness sake. How would I respond if persecuted?
The proverbs in this chapter provide some helpful counsel… “The fear of man
brings a snare, but he who trusts in the Lord will be exalted” (verse 25). “A
man’s pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor” (verse
23). “Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice for man comes from the Lord” (verse
26). In His sermon on the Mount, Jesus told his followers, “Blessed are those
who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely
say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who
were before you” (Matthew 5:10-12). Dear Father, please help me learn the wisdom
of the Proverbs. Help me to humble myself, to seek Your favor and to trust You
completely. Please help believers who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness and for allegiance to Your Son to draw nearer and nearer to You. Comfort us with Your peace and
fill us with Your joy. Help us to keep our eyes on You, our trust in You and
our hope alive, for great is our reward in heaven. Yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever!
