On
the Sabbath
During the years that Nehemiah and
Ezra were prominent leaders in Jerusalem, worship had been restored in the
house of the Lord and the people had made an oath to observe all the
commandments, ordinances and statutes of God. They promised also that their
children would not intermarry and that they would not buy or sell on the
Sabbath. But it only took the absence of Nehemiah’s righteous leadership for
the people to forget their commitment to God and compromise His ways. What a
common theme this is! From the time of Moses, when God first gave His laws to
His people, it was always the same. Under the guidance of a righteous leader,
the people would be inspired to make a covenant with the LORD to walk in His
ways. But when the guidance of that leader was no longer present, the people would
(in a relatively short period of time) forget the covenant they made and the
God they made the covenant with. Thus, the desperate need for a new covenant
and the guidance of a righteous leader that would never depart. Dear Father, thank
You for Your Son who made possible a new covenant, a better and lasting covenant,
because it is a covenant written in our hearts and minds. Thank You for His
righteous guidance as He lives His life in us, making us one with You as You
are with Him! Thank You for the incredibly awesome covenant that You have made
with us to be our God and we Your people! How blessed we are to be forever
called the children of God!
