When Moses first appeared to them with the good news of their deliverance and the plan to bring them to the land of promise, the children of Israel were ecstatic. But their joyous anticipation was soon quashed by Pharaoh’s cruel responses to crush any defection by the slaves. He made their barely tolerable lives completely intolerable. The LORD instructed Moses to encourage Israel with the message from the LORD that He would bring them out from under the burdens of the Egyptians and deliver them from their bondage. He would redeem them with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then He would take them for His people and be their God. But they did not listen to Moses on account of their despondency and cruel bondage. Oh, how many times have our brothers and sisters in Christ been unable to listen to the good news of the LORD’s deliverance and His promise to work things out for good, because of their despondency and cruel bondage! Trying to encourage them with the Scripture can be unwanted because pain is so great. Perhaps that is when intercessory prayer is most needed – when our brethren are trapped in a state of discouragement, depression and despondency and are struggling to pray themselves. They need us to pray for them. Dear Father, please put it on our hearts to pray for our brothers and sisters who are in a state of despondency because of the cruel bondage that has them trapped. Help us to pray for their deliverance and for their hope to be restored. Thank You for Your Son through whom we have not only hope of deliverance, but the awesome hope of glory. How wonderful that day will be when our hope is finally realized, when there is no more pain and no more sorrow, but a life filled with joy forever with You and Your Son.
