At first glance it appears that
Achsah is being treated by her father Caleb as an object or bargaining chip.
But I'm thinking that hers is a far better story than that; perhaps closer to
this scenario: Caleb loved his daughter so much that he not only wanted to give
her a gift of land but also a very fine husband. So, he concocted a way to make
this happen by offering his daughter’s hand in marriage to someone who could
defeat the enemies currently on that land… someone strong and capable… someone
who had courage and guts… someone who would be good enough for his daughter.
Othniel, Achsah's cousin accepted the challenge and was victorious and married
the girl. And then Achsah persuaded Othniel to ask for more land - the Negev
and springs of water. And without hesitation Caleb gave it to her. Caleb was a
good man and I believe that he wanted his daughter to marry a good man. This
could be the way it happened. It does make for really great story. Thank You,
Father, for the gift of Your amazing Word with all its wonderful stories that
we may be enriched by them! And, thank You for being our wonderful Father! We
are so very blessed to be Your children. How blessed I am to be Your daughter
and how grateful for your favor and tender love!
