Numbers 1:1-4:20

Bamidbar - In the Desert

(Day 42 of the Omer)
Numbers 1:1-3 Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above—all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies.”

The children of Israel in the wilderness were assigned to perform various duties in order that they might reflect their God and function well as a community. Like they, we also have been called to reflect our God in holiness, unity and love. We have been called into the body of Christ (who is the head) to do our part for the effective work and growth of our community. Let us therefore walk worthy of the calling with which we were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called in one hope of our calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all, and in us all. Let us no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of our own mind, but let us be renewed in the spirit of our mind, putting on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4) Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. (Psalm 133:1-2)
