The Light of the World
God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness he called "night." (Genesis 1:3-5) There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:6-12) This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1 John 1:6-7) Therefore let us walk as children of light. (Ephesians 5:8) We are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. (1 Thessalonians 5:5) We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that we may declare the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)
