When
I am Afraid, I Will Put My Trust in You
In Psalms 55, David wrote, “My heart
is in anguish within me…” He spoke of horror, terror and fear. He said that it
was not an enemy who reproached him, nor a competitor, for then he could bear
it. No, it was his companion who had turned on him. It was his friend who
sought to destroy him. It was his brother in the Lord who betrayed him. We, who
have thus been treated by someone we thought was a friend, understand the hurt
and the pain of betrayal. And for a time, while in a state of anguish,
confusion and shock, we expend a lot of energy in trying to defend ourselves. Yet, often-times our defensiveness only makes the
situation worse. There is so much to learn from the way that Jesus handled betrayal.
Jesus knew that Judas was committing an act of betrayal against Him, yet He continued
to be kind to Judas, and serve Him. Though Jesus grieved because of His friend’s
betrayal, Jesus did not try to stop Judas or correct him. Jesus spoke nothing
in His own defense, rather He entrusted His life completely into the hands of
His Father. I pray that if I must again experience betrayal, I will respond
with greater maturity and follow Jesus’ example. Dear Father, You will never
allow the righteous to be shaken. Help us to trust in Your love. For if You are
for us, who can be against us. Fill us with Your peace and help us to respond to
those who betray us with grace and love.
