Me
The Pharisees were the recognized
religious leaders in Judea. They were the sons of Abraham, custodians of the
Law, and teachers of righteousness. However, the authoritative status that the
Pharisees enjoyed was soon to be challenged.
For John the Baptist was called by God to introduce Jesus to the world (John
1:6-8). Jesus was the Son of God. He was the Word that became flesh (John 1:14)
and the epitome of righteousness (Hebrews 4:15). Both the Pharisees and Jesus came
to John to be baptized. And both were exposed for who they really were: the
Pharisees and Sadducees as a brood of vipers, and Jesus as the Beloved Son of
God. John the Baptist could see that the Pharisees and Sadducees were not
bearing good fruit – nor were they repentant. On the other hand, Jesus (who had
no need to repent) submitted to the law regarding baptism, because it was
fitting to do so in order to fulfill all righteousness. Dear Father, thank You so much, for the witness
of John the Baptist and the account of Your precious Son’s life, recorded by
Matthew and the other gospel writers. Help me to clearly see what righteousness
looks like from Jesus’ own example and give me ears to hear so that I may embrace
His teachings. Make me to have a repentant heart and cultivate me so that I
will bear good fruit. May we be followers of Your beloved Son Jesus, and become just like
Him.
