Beware
of the Leaven
Even though the disciples believed
that Jesus was the Messiah, they still failed to understand His teachings and clung
to many misconceptions. On one occasion, Jesus asked them, “Do you not yet see
or understand? Do you have a hardened heart? Having eyes, do you not see? And
having ears, do you not hear?” On another occasion, He said to Peter, “You are
not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” And yet, on another
occasion he said to His disciples, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I
be with you? How long shall I put up with you?” Jesus said these things to men
who were with Him every day; walking, talking, witnessing, learning, and
sharing life with Him. They had so much
to learn. They had to learn to listen to Him, for He was the beloved Son of God.
They had to learn to receive Him, as a little child would. They had to learn
that they were called to serve, not to be served. They had to give up their own ways of thinking
and deny their own selfish desires for Jesus’ sake and for the sake of the gospel.
Dear Father, help us also, to listen to Your Son. Help us to receive Him, with the
trusting attitude of a small child. Help us to have a heart that serves. Help
us to deny our own selfish proclivities so that we may represent You in unselfish
service toward others. May we give up our self-centered life today so that we
may live with You and Your Son in a glorious life tomorrow!
