For
Such a Time as This
Purim is celebrated by Jewish people around the world every
year, because a brave and beautiful woman named Esther was instrumental in saving
the Jews in her region from annihilation. Who could have imagined that a little
Jewish orphan girl named Hadassah would one day win the admiration and
affection of the king and become his wife? Esther had hidden her Jewish
identity, so that neither the king nor the general population knew that the new
queen was Jewish. But when her people were threatened, Esther revealed her
Jewish identity and she risked her own life to save theirs. At the prompting of
her guardian Mordecai, Esther approached the king to implore him to show favor
to her people. “Who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time
as this?” Mordecai asked. And miraculously,
the king showed Esther and her people favor over the enemies of the Jews, and
the day that was marked for their annihilation became a day of victory and
celebration. Dear Father, thank You for the story of Esther. What a beautiful
example she set! May we remember her story if we are ever confronted with the
choice between standing up for what is right and our own security. For perhaps,
You are calling us to take a stand in “such a time as this”.
