The LORD instructed Moses to place
the lamps and incense altar outside the veil that concealed the mercy seat (that was over the ark of the testimony) where
the LORD met with Moses. And the LORD instructed that every morning and every
evening, Aaron was to trim the lamps for continuous light, and burn the
fragrant incense on the altar. How beautiful the symbolism is for us –
regarding both the lamps and the altar of incense. Scripture reveals that the
Word of God is “a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path” (Psalms
119:105). Jesus is the Word manifested (John 1:14). And He is the light of the
world (John 8:12). Jesus alone possesses immortality and dwells in
unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see (1 Timothy 6:16).
Scriptures also reveal that our prayers are as incense to the LORD (Psalms
141:2, Revelation 5:8, Revelation 8:3-4). The altar for the incense was
placed immediately in front of the mercy seat. Though a veil was in-between, the
sweet incense wafted from the altar into the presence of God through the veil,
when twice a day, the incense was burned in the perpetual light of the lamp.
Dear Father, thank You for calling us out of darkness and into the marvelous
light of Your precious Son (1 Peter 2:9). May we live in His light forever! And
“may our prayers be counted as incense before You; the lifting up of our hands
as the evening offering” (Psalms 141:1-2). Great is the LORD and greatly to be
praised!
