Do Not Boast About Tomorrow
In our journeys through life we
discover that when we boast about ourselves – or about what we are going to
achieve, we open wide the opportunities to be humbled. We learn that we don’t
know as much as we thought we did and we realize that we don’t have as much
control over our lives as we believed. We realize that trusting in our own
abilities and resources isn’t wise. And boasting about ourselves sets us up for
a fall. However, there is a time to boast. This is what the LORD says: “Let not
the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the
wealthy man in his riches. But let him who boasts boast in this, that he
understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion,
justice and righteousness on the earth – for I delight in these things,”
declares the LORD (Jeremiah 9:23-24). The apostle Paul encourages the brethren
that it is by God’s doing we are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from
God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, just as it is
written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Dear
Father, I am old enough now to realize that there is nothing in “me” to boast
about. But I do boast in You. For You are everything good and pure and right. Everything
You do is motivated by love. And if there is anything good in me, it is
because You love me and are transforming me. “My soul makes its boast in the
LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us
exalt His name together!” (Psalms 34:2-3)
