Seek
Righteousness, Seek Humility
“Gather yourselves together,”
Zephaniah told the people of Judah. “Before the day of the Lord’s anger comes
upon you” He told those who were humble enough to listen, to seek the Lord; seek
righteousness, seek humility. Zephaniah said that “all the earth will be
devoured in the fire of His jealousy. For He will make a complete end, indeed a
terrifying one, of all the inhabitants of the earth”. The apostle Peter warned
the believers in his day to be people of holy conduct and godliness, for “the day
of the Lord will come like a thief in which the heavens will pass away with a
roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and
its works will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10-13). “But,” Peter continues, “according
to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which
righteousness dwells”. In a parable to his disciples Jesus explained that the
sons of the kingdom and the sons of the evil one dwell together in the world until
the end of the age when “the Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they
will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,
and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun
in the kingdom of their Father” (Matthew 13:36-43). And in the book of
Revelation, John shared his vision of a new heaven and a new earth; “for the
first heaven and the first earth passed away (Revelation 21:1). Dear Father, Zephaniah prophesied of the day of
Your wrath – a horrible and dreadful day. But we also know that a day of glory
and beauty and peace and love is soon to follow. May we be children of the
Kingdom. May we be people of holy conduct and godliness. May we seek
righteousness and humility. And may we shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of
our Father!
