Is
Not Your Wickedness Great?
Job was alone. He had not only lost his
precious family and the comradery and support of his friends, but also the
relationship he had with his God. Job longed to hear from God. He longed to understand
whatever it was that God would say to him. But God was silent. He was nowhere
to be found. David mirrored Job’s same sentiments in Psalm 13: “How long, O
Lord? Will You forget me forever? …How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
having sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over
me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep
the sleep of death, and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my
adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken…” (Psalm 13:1-4). At some point in our
lifetimes, most of us will experience trials that are severe and enduring. We
might respond with deep depression and perhaps bitterness. We may not find
anyone who understands what we are going through. And sometimes God will remain
silent. What do we do when we feel so completely alone and are grasping at a
thread of hope? David concludes Psalm 13
with the answer. Trust in His lovingkindness and rejoice in His salvation. Dear
Father, When I am burdened by trials and am feeling low and all alone, let me
remember Your lovingkindness which never fails. Help me to trust in Your
faithfulness and rejoice in Your salvation. “I will sing to the Lord, because
He has dealt bountifully with me” (Psalms 13:5-6).
