The People of Gibeon responded in a
typically human way to a crisis in their lives.
They tried to change a pressing and unfavorable situation by taking
things into their own hands rather than trusting in the LORD as Rahab had done.
The Gibeonites did this through deception. We read many accounts in Scripture
of people taking matters into their own hands – an action that most often
brings consequences. And the Gibeonites did suffer consequences for their
deception. Israel was also guilty of taking things into their own hands for
they entered into an agreement they were told not to enter because they did not
first consult God. If they had consulted
God, they would have been made aware of the deception. Both parties were guilty of taking actions
apart from trusting and waiting on God. How often do I take matters into my own
hands? How often do I act without
consulting God? Do I show my trust in
God’s perfect will and timing by waiting? Dear Father, thank You for Your
perfect love. Those who trust in You and
wait on You are often spared the consequences and pitfalls that result from
jumping ahead of You. Help us to wait on You.
Help us to listen to Your voice as You lead us on our journeys through
life.
